Metamaterials are a paradigm for engineering electromagnetic space and controlling propagation of waves. They provide novel functionalities such as such as negative refraction, invisibility, ultra-thin lenses and many more, however, these are typically narrowband and fixed.
The ultimate goal of photonics research may be described as arbitrary control over optical properties at any point in time and space which requires the ability to control the optical properties of a photonic structure with sub-wavelength spatial resolution. The nano-optomechanical metamaterials consist of coupled electromagnetic resonators supported by nanomechanical resonators, such that relative motion of the electromagnetic resonators changes the optical properties of the metamaterial array. We demonstrate dynamic control over photonic metamaterial properties beyond the diffraction limit using various driving forces.

簡要學經歷:
Dr. Jun-Yu Ou is a Senior Research Fellow in the Optoelectronic Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton. He started his career as an instrument specialist of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and focused ion beam (FIB) at FEI Company. In 2010, he joined the ORC at the University of Southampton to undertake his doctoral studies at the crossroads of nanophotonics and nanomechanics. He completed his PhD on "Reconfigurable Photonic Metamaterials" in May 2015. For this work, he was awarded the prestigious Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Doctoral Prize fellowship. For his PhD research, he was awarded the Institute of Physics (London) Doctoral Research Prize in 2015. At the end of the EPSRC fellowship, he was appointed the level of senior research fellow at the ORC in 2016.
Dr Ou leads research efforts on the topic of opto-nanomechanical metamaterials. His research has led to long standing impact on the fields of nanophotonics and metamaterials as evidenced by more than 40 high-profile journal publications including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, Nano Letters, an h-index of 18 with 1640+ citations (Google Scholar), more than 100 conference contributions and 4 patent applications. His work has also been internationally recognized by invited presentations at major conferences such as SPIE Photonics. Furthermore, the success in the area of nano-optomechanical metamaterials has attracted global attention in both academic (Nature, Laser Focus World) and commercial news outlets (BBC, Financial Times).
